More Information about Episode 36 This episode was a true challenge to witness for visitors as the waiting period was extended several times, the weather was very bipolar ranging from good to rainy, to voggy Kona winds, a government shutdown was still in progress since the last episode resulting in less personal working at the park, all of the car rentals were sold out this week due to both the cruise ship arriving in Hilo, military operations were underway, and Veterans Day Holiday was approaching. The price to extend a car rental went up to $450 a day for a mid-size 4 door sedan due to the lack of rental cars available. On top of that, certain flights were being canceled due to the government shutdown. It was agony and costed many visitors more money than what they expected to pay for the car rental alone as each day extended out towards Sunday from USGS's predicted window period. This Rainy volcanic episode began abruptly with both the North and South vent in Halemaʻumaʻu crater pooling lava simultaneously with a high amount of pressure. The South vent reportedly reached 1,100 ft. while the South vent reached 1,000 ft. at its peak height. On Wednesday morning, most people were sure that Kīlauea was starting to erupt beginning at 4am in the morning; however, the South vent was not able to garner enough pressure to start the new episode. The wait from Wednesday to Sunday felt excruciatingly long especially for the people who waited in the park for the eruption to occur at any moment. The tilt plummeted on Wednesday morning and started a roller coaster ride going up and down repeatedly before is finally erupted more than half a week later. Waiting for this eruption was the ultimate test of patience. Although it rained for hours during this episode it was still a site to behold. Hawaiians often refer to Kīlauea volcano as Madame Pele whose power is multifaceted, embodying the creative and destructive forces of volcanoes, fire, and lightning in Hawaiian mythology. She possesses superhuman strength and durability, can shapeshift into various forms (including an old woman, young woman, or fire spirit), and controls volcanoes, with her home believed to be at Kīlauea's Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Her power is deeply tied to the creation of the Hawaiian islands and demands reverence from those who live on or visit them.
