Born in 1913 in Cork, Ireland, David Lord served with the Royal Air Force’s No. 271 Squadron as a Dakota pilot. In September 1944, during Operation Market Garden, Lord displayed extraordinary courage when his aircraft was hit by German fire while attempting to resupply encircled Allied troops. With his right engine ablaze, he still chose to make one final circuit to drop the desperately needed supplies. Moments later, his aircraft was fatally damaged, crashing near Wolfheze. David Lord and most of his crew were killed, but his sacrifice ensured that Allied soldiers on the ground received critical support. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the UK’s highest military honor. Eighty-one years later, Aero Legends will honor his memory with their Dakota aircraft, “Pegasus – The Ghost of Arnhem.” The plane will make two tribute laps over Oosterbeek before flying over the crash site on Duitsekampweg, Wolfheze, where Lord and his crew lost their lives. The memorial flight will take place on Friday, September 19, 2025, scheduled for 09:00 or 11:00 AM, depending on weather and airspace conditions.
