Tens of thousands of Russians took to the streets across more than 120 cities and towns to protest in support of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny and against Russia's ruling elite on Jan. 23. The protests came as Navalny was sentenced to 30 days in jail upon his return to Moscow after recovering in Germany from what western experts said was Novichok poisoning. The protests saw a heavy police crackdown, with more than 3,700 detentions — the largest number in Russia's modern history. Video footage shows riot cops beating and detaining protesters, drawing condemnation from the West. Navalny's team has already announced another round of protests scheduled for next Sunday, Jan. 31.
