The Al-Hakim Masjid is a historic and prominent mosque in Cairo, Egypt, belonging to Fatimid Dynasty that ruled Egypt from the 10th to the 12th century CE. It is named after Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (985–1021), the 16th Fatimid caliph. The Masjid is also known as Al-Anwar, meaning "the Luminous", similar in style to the name of the earlier Al-Azhar Mosque founded by the Fatimids. It is the second-largest Masjid in the city of Cairo, and the fourth oldest. The significance of this Masjid extends beyond its architectural grandeur, holding deep cultural and religious importance for the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community. The latest restoration project, at the hands of Sultan al Bohra Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, was the second such initiative undertaken by the Dawoodi Bohra community after the first renovation and restoration project that was completed nearly forty years ago by his revered father Sultan al Bohra Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. The renovations were undertaken as part of a large-scale plan by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to boost tourism to Cairo’s Islamic sites.
