The MTM-1 Data Card includes all MTM-1 basic motions and can be categorized into these 3 sections: VISUAL FUNCTIONS such as Eye Travel or Eye Focus BODY MOTIONS such as Foot Motion, Leg Motion, Side Step, Turn Body, Bend, Sit or Walk and BASIC MOTIONS of the FINGERS or HAND such as Turn, Reach, Grasp, Release, Move, Position, Apply Pressure or Disengage. These basic motions of the FINGERS or HAND are tabled into hundreds of unique MTM-1 codes, each corresponding to a specific Time Measurement Unit or TMU for short. 1 hour equals 100,000 TMU; therefore 1 TMU is equal to 0.036 seconds. We start by observing the task, considering that the basic motions of each hand are analyzed separately. This task is completed using only the hands and fingers and can be analyzed with the basic motions of REACH, GRASP, MOVE, POSITION and RELEASE, this is referred to as the Basic Motion Cycle. Complete the header section of the MTM-1 form by filling in the description of the task: Install screw (Phillips head) with a power screwdriver. The fields of Starts, Includes and Ends should clearly describe the process from reaching with the left hand to the screw, obtaining the screw, placing the screw onto the screwdriver, using the screwdriver to install the screw and ending when the screw is fully installed. The weight of the Power Screwdriver is noted in the field of limitations as being less than 1 kilogram. This is important as the time values for the basic motion MOVE are for weight stresses less than 1 kilogram. The code schema is usually developed to meet a company’s specific needs and should be easy and logical to understand. For the sake of this demonstration the code has been assigned as LED2.B.064.1. The last digit is most significant as the number 1 indicating that the analysis was completed using MTM-1. Now that the header section is complete, we can describe each basic motion performed by the left hand... Now describe what the right hand is doing, considering that some basic motions do occur simultaneously with basic motions of the left hand and must then be entered into the same line... Now that the work has been described we can select and fill in the correct MTM-1 codes from the MTM-1 data card. To understand all the influencing factors and select the correct MTM-1 code will require training and will not be covered in this video. As an example the first basic motion with the left hand is coded as R20C and can be decoded as follows: R stands for the basic motion Reach, 20 stands for the influence factor of motion length that is 20cm and C stands for the Motion Case. Motion Case describes the degree of control of the Motion. The time value for the Code R20C can be read directly from the MTM-1 data card and equals 11.4 TMU. Moving the power screwdriver with the right hand is analyzed with an M20B code that equals 10.5 TMU. As this time value is less than 11.4 TMU of R20C, it is not the time limiting motion and this is indicated by the square bracket. Only the higher value of the simultaneous motions is entered into the TMU column.   An experienced MTM practitioner will easily be able to complete the analysis as follows: Grasp the screw is analyzed with a G4B that equals 9.1 TMU Move the screw 30cm to the power screwdriver is analyzed with a M30C that equals 15.1 TMU Position the screw on the magnetic tip of power screwdriver is analyzed with a - P1SSE that equals 9.1 TMU and so on until every basic motion code is filled in with the corresponding time values. Finally, the TMU values of all the basic motions are added up for a total of 129.4 TMU or 4.6 seconds.
