Buy me a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/mysteriousmagpie Many of John Wyndham's science fiction tales are also horror stories, using strongly gothic ingredients. This is arguably most obviously the case with The Midwich Cuckoos, which is a sci-fi revisitation of the myth of changeling children. In this case, an alien influence causes every woman in the village of Midwich to fall pregnant on the same day. If this were not unsettling enough, when the children are born they are all of them strange and... different... As the story's title implies, these are 'cuckoos', laid into the nests of human beings... On a similar note, if you're reading this on a channel that doesn't have the word 'magpie' in the title then that's because my video has been cloned, right down to the description text, by a lazy and unscrupulous channel owner. If you type the name of this video into the youtube search field you'll be able to find my channel where no cuts are ever made to the radio programmes. Anyway - The Midwich Cuckoos is an unsettling story that speaks of the way in which the young can seem uncanny and unknowable to older generations, but taken to a fascinating extreme. This early 1980s radio adaptation features a distinctive of-it's-era synthesized score, and remains my favourite version - though the later and longer Classic Serial adaptation starring Bill Nighy is certainly very good too.
