Uthman summoned Abdullah ibn Saad, Egypt's governor, for consultation in Medina. During Saad's absence, Muhammad bin Abi Hudhaifa seized power in Egypt. Although Saad returned swiftly, Uthman was unable to provide military support, leaving Saad powerless to quash the rebellion. Prominent Sunni scholars reported that several leading Sahaba called for Uthman's resignation due to nepotism and profligacy. Contingents from Egypt, Kufa, and Basra, each numbering around 1,000, were sent to Medina with orders to assassinate Uthman and overthrow the government. Despite their offers of caliphate being turned down by Ali, Al-Zubayr, and Talha, the rebels managed to sway public opinion in Medina, undermining Uthman's support. The siege of Uthman's house intensified over time, especially after pilgrims departed for Mecca, leaving Uthman isolated. He refused to allow his supporters to fight back, aiming to prevent Muslim bloodshed. The anti-Uthman revolt's causes are disputed among Shia and Sunni Muslims, with grievances arising from Uthman's governance style and favoritism towards family members in appointing governors, leading to accusations of tyranny. On June 17, 656, rebels breached Uthman's house, leading to his assassination despite his prayers for protection and his wives' attempts to shield him. Uthman's assassination marked a significant and controversial moment in Islamic history, influenced by deep-rooted political and tribal tensions.
