The Choir of Wells Cathedral, Somerset, under the direction of Malcolm Archer, perform the second movement of American composer Leonard Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms'. Wells' then-Deputy Head Chorister Robert Karlsson-Bourke, a Swedish-born singer who during his time at the cathedral was twice a finalist in the BBC Young Chorister of the Year competition, sings the central boy soprano (sometimes countertenor) solo in the Wells rendition of Bernstein's work. The solo, it has been suggested, written specifically for a high or unchanged male voice, is meant to evoke an image of the young David himself singing the psalm. Wikipedia notes that the 'David' theme was adapted from a Bernstein musical that was never completed, whilst the part sung by the tenors and basses was drawn from material that never made it into 'West Side Story', perhaps the composer's most famous work, sacred or secular. [ Hebrew Text & (English Translation): ] Adonai ro-i, lo eḥsar. Bin'ot deshe yarbitseini, Al mei m'nuḥot y'nahaleini, Naf'shi y'shovev, Yan'ḥeini b'ma'aglei tsedek, L'ma'an sh'mo.
