There's a shift happening in the health world - obsession with self-tracking and optimization. I've learned from tracking blood sugar and sleep temporarily. But people assume you need perfect sleep, meditation, journaling, and tracking everything. If you're not doing it all, they think your day is wasted. I struggled with this. Why do I need perfect everything just to be functional? Here's what helped me and my clients: There are two types of days - "bubble wrap days" and "out in the wild." Bubble wrap days are when you perfect everything - ideal sleep, perfect nutrition, exercise, maybe journaling or meditation. It's unrealistic to expect this daily, especially with jobs, kids, and social lives. Out in the wild days happen when life throws curveballs - travel, work chaos, sick kids. The important thing: more bubble wrap days you implement, more powerful you show up on wild days. With little kids, I rarely have days when I've done everything I should for my best self. That's okay. The more boxes you check on bubble wrap days, the more raw material you have to react positively when life throws wild days at you. It's not about perfection or all-or-nothing. More battery power means more power to react positively. This framing helps me avoid perfectionism while still striving to be my best.
