Patrick Lyoya was fatally shot by a Grand Rapids police officer April 4 after a struggle with the officer's taser. The officer said he pulled Lyoya over for a traffic stop, stating that his license plate wasn't registered to the vehicle. Lyoya was driving the vehicle, exited, and initially interacted with the officer. Police state that Lyoya then tried to flee the scene once he realized he was going to be arrested. A fight ensued, the officer eventually got Lyoya pinned to the ground, face-down, and shot him. Lyoya's father, Peter, disputes that the shooting began with a traffic stop. He believes his son was pulled over to the curb due to his vehicle making suspicious noises, and a squad then approached.
