Yosuke Yamashita - Born in Tokyo in 1942, Yamashita is a household celebrity in Japan, and has been performing on the international stages including frequent appearances at many famous jazz festivals. He has been working mainly in a jazz field, also collaborating energetically with various genres of music, ranging from classical orchestra to Japanese or foreign traditional folk music. Critics admire Yamashita’s explosive playing style, often compared with that of Cecil Taylor, as his own unique achievement. In 1988 Yamashita formed his own New York Trio with bass player Cecil McBee and drummer Pheeroan akLaff. In 1994 he was invited to the 50th anniversary concert of Verve Records, a prestigious jazz label, as a sole musician participated from Asian countries. In 1998 Yamashita made the film score for Shohei Imamura's "Kanzo Sensei (Dr. Akagi)". By the achievement of this work, he received "the Education Minister's Encouragement Award", and other film awards. In 2000, he did the world premiere of his original concerto "Encounter for Improviser". In 2003 he was conferred "the Medal with Purple Ribbon" from Japanese Government for his contributions to the arts and academics. In 2004, he has toured the United States commemorating the 150th anniversary of U.S. - Japan relations. In that year, he also performed his own concerto with the RAI National Orchestra conducted by Yutaka Sado in Turin, Italy. March 2006, he played with a free jazz giant, Ornette Coleman when his group toured Japan. In February 2007, he has presented a duo concert with a master pianist in free jazz, Cecil Taylor. In January 2008, he did the world premiere of his third concerto "Explorer" with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yutaka Sado. In May 2009, he did the world premiere of the piano concerto No. 4 “Jazz” composed by Toshi Ichiyanagi. In January 2010, he made a piano duo concert with Stanislav Bunin. In February 2012, he celebrated his 70th anniversary with Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra in Hanoi, Vietnam. In February 2015, he made concert tour to Slovakia and Czech Republic. In February 2016, he made a concert at Musikverein in Vienna with Tonkünstler Orchester conducted by Yutaka Sado. In 2018, he released his New York trio’s 30th anniversary album “30 Light-Years Floating” from Verve, Universal Music, and made a concert tour. In 2020, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his original trio. Yukio Yokoyama - Yukio Yokoyama was born in Tokyo in 1971. He entered the high schoolassociated to the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music in 1986, and in the following year went to study at the Paris Music Conservatoire Collegium with a scholarship from the French Government. There, he studied under Jacques Rouvier, Vlado Perlmuter and others. In 1989 he won prizes at the Busconi International Concours and the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Concours. In 1990, at the age of 19, he graduated from the Paris Conservatoire with grants of Premier Prix in piano and chamber music and the same year won third prize (no first prize was allocated this year) from the Chopin International Piano Competition and also the Sonata prize. With this success, Yokoyama then officially began his concert activities, including recitals and performances with orchestras in cities all around the world, in addition to chamber music and radio broadcast performances. In 2001, he made his successful recital debut as well as concerto debut in St. Petersburg with the St. Petersburg Philharmony under Nikolai Alexeev. During the years of 2005 – 2006, Yokoyama performed together with Berlin Symphony Orchestra “Emperor Concerto” under the baton of Eliahu Inbal. He also performed Liszt 1st piano concerto with the NHK symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jun Merkl. He has accomplished the marathon concert of all 5 Beethoven piano concertos with the Japan Chamber Orchestra performed in one night. With much success, he performed together with the London Symphony under the baton of Myung-Whon Chung. In 1991, Yokoyama released his first two CDs, of Chopin piano concerto No. 1, and Piano Sonata Nos. 2 and 3, on Sony records. He was awarded the Cziffra Foundation Award in Paris in the same year. He has released many CDs to date, including Liszt’s Etudes of Transcendental Techniques, which was also released by Sony in Japan in fall 1998 and was produced by Grammy nominated producer Wolf Erichson. In 1999, the Liszt CD won the twenty-fifth International Liszt Grand Prix for a new recording. Currently Professor at Ueno Gakuen, and Adjunct Professor at Elisabeth University of Music, Yokoyama is also devoted to educating young musicians. In the field of education he teaches the younger generation, and in addition he serves as the president of the Japan Paderewski Association after the late Ms. Hiroko Nakamura. He has demonstrated his extraordinary talents in many fields and established a position as a top artist leading Japan’s music industry.
