How to Integrate the Character (the Persona) with Awakening What should be done with the character after seeing that we are not it? The character does not disappear with Awakening; it continues to show up, because it is a deeply ingrained program in the mind, in personal history, in relationships, and in the way we interact with life. Understanding this — and other factors discussed here — prevents its reappearance from becoming an unnecessary, and even painful, inner conflict. The character fulfills essential functions within creation. It is the most sophisticated illusion generated by Consciousness: the sense of being a separate, individual “I,” with a name and a story. This illusion is particularly intense in human beings. The character is not a mistake; it is a hypnosis that Consciousness does on itself to experience separation for a while, and it is also a functional tool within the human experience. After Awakening, although it has been seen that there is no separate Consciousness and that we truly are undifferentiated Consciousness, the feeling of being the character persists to some degree. The character becomes more subtle and less suffering, but it reappears, often in specific contexts like social life, where language, names, and personal stories remain necessary to relate to others. The function of the character can also be seen in the professional and economic spheres. To interact in the marketplace, practice a profession, create a business, or simply obtain a job, it is indispensable to present oneself "personably" through a name, an image, and a story. At this practical level, the character is a tool of interaction that cannot be eliminated, as long as one lives within a civilization. Therefore, the key is not to FORCEFULLY eliminate the character, but to stop believing it is real, and establish a healthy relationship with it. We need to see it for what it is: a mental complex of thoughts and feelings. And with that seeing, plus proper embodiment work, REMOVING IT FROM THE THRONE OF OUR LIFE. From this understanding, the psychological / spiritual work after Awakening consists of two things: 1- Healing the character by releasing its neurotic aspects -- understanding neurosis as psychological suffering. Awakening facilitates this process because the heavy identification with the ego is gone. Unlike traditional psychotherapy, which works from the premise that the individual IS the character, Embodiment work is done from the Truth -- "there is no-one here." This allows for the character loosing most of its power and stop defending its false beliefs and neurosis as a way to continue "existing." And without strong defenses the ego can be reduced further and further. What has been explained here, has been also been presented in traditions such as Advaita and Zen: "the purposes of Awakening is to polish the personality" says Phillips Kapleau in his classic The Three Pillars of Zen." 2- Dethroning the character, removing it from the center of our life and placing it in the service of the One Universal Consciousness, that inhabits the body. The character must cease to govern your existence and become a functional tool, subordinate to what you truly are. The self-development work prior to Awakening is valuable too. Taking the personal development phase seriously, by engaging in therapy, self-caring, coaching, introspection, reading books, watching YouTubes, meditation, prayer, etc. etc. — is very valuable. This work prepares the ground for Awakening. An excess of immaturity, neurosis and suffering usually prevents Awakening from occurring. There are specific milestones of personal maturation that facilitate Awakening and generally should be reached before it occurs, although it is also true that a strong devotion or urgency to Wake-Up can, in some cases, compensate for shortcomings in that preparation. So remember, the character does not disappear with Awakening, but it must be dethroned and integrated in a wise, healthy, and functional way, avoiding inner conflicts and living a conscious and freer life. I structure my work in three phases: coaching before Awakening, the Awakening Protocol, and coaching after Awakening (to “embody” the Awakening.) • Gian Girardi School of Awakening: https://giangirardi.com • The Awakening Protocol: https://giangirardi.com/the-awakening... • Coaching Sessions with Gian before or after Awakening: GianGirardi@iCloud.com
