The Pacific Crest Trail claims another one. On April 5th, 2025 the air crew of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office received a dispatch call regarding an injured PCT hiker, located at the 6,300’ level. Dehydration, low temp, exhaustion, and high altitude exertion proved to be too much for this 23-year-old hiker. The rescue specialist you hear on this call is one of our most experienced, having been a Navy Corpsman with combat experience while assigned to a USMC infantry battalion in Afghanistan. We certainly appreciate his past and current service 🇺🇸🫡 This hiker was flown out to an ambulance and driven to the hospital for treatment. The section of the PCT that goes through our county is one of the fastest elevation gains in all the trail (from the Mexican border to Canada). It’s early on the the hike, where the hikers are quite yet in “trail shape.” Some see out Mt. San Jacinto in the distance with it’s 10,834’ peak as the first gut check. Some tap out there and bypass all together.
