#jan #dismas #zelenka #score #sheetmusic #zwv #zwv156 The autograph score to the last of three Litaniae Xaverianae settings by Zelenka, /Z. 156/ - a setting comprising mostly chorales with soloist parts intermixed with arias. Composed during the same time and for the same occasion as the Missa Divi Xaverii, /Z. 12/ of 1729, this work is a number setting as is typical for the Xavier litany's of Dresden, a mixture of choruses, vocal concertante movements /where solo singers are intermixed with the chorus/, arias and duets, and brief dramatic sections. Repetition of the majestic sweep of the opening movement as the conclusion to the settings provides a wonderfully satisfying ending. Moreover, the twelfth movement, "Sancte Francisce II", is a truncated /and unexpected/ repetition of the third movement with it's earnest entreaties. After the opening Kyrie-Christie and following prayers, the Litania de Sancto Xaverio continues by elucidating the qualities and miraculous powers of the saint with each phrase being followed by the petition "Ora pro nobis" /Pray for us/. The text of is set over fourteen movements of various lengths, to the usual orchestral tutti of violins 1 and 2, viola, oboes and continuo. Zelenka added two horns instruments so beloved at the Dresden court - especially by the Crown Prince Friedrich August II who kept a pair of horn players in his personal court in mind for this setting of 1729, however, must have been Johann Adam and Andreas Schindler from the Hofkapelle, and Zelenka has taken every opportunity possible to display the virtuosity of these brothers from Bohemia. The strength of certain aspects of the text of these litanies invites an equally robust musical response. Consequently, word painting abounds, especially in the highly dramatic fifth movement with prayers to the saint who is styled "Auxiliator naufragantium" /Aid of the shipwrecked/, "Fugator daemonum" /Expeller of Demons/, and "Vita mortuorum" /Life of the Dead/ with chilling harmonies. Certain sections of the text are given additional weight - the majestic Gloria societatis Jesu for example. Likewise, particularly sections of the text, especially the invocation "Ora pro nobis" are often set as a prolonged melisma. Apart from the freely-treated invocation "Ora pro nobis", however, Zelenka did not hesitate to omit small portions of the text of this litany, usually in the interest of achieving cohesive and effective design. The conclusion of this work deserves special mention: just as Zelenka's Miserere in C Minor of 1738, /Z. 57/ ends in an unusual manner on the dominant chord, /an imperfect cadence/, so Zelenka's Litania de Sancto Xaverio in F Major closes on the dominant chord of C Major - an ending Zelenka scholar and conductor of Collegium 1704 Václav Luks suggests "this heartfelt plea to Saint Francis Xavier awaits an answer."
