Drink, Love, Dance - Winter Panigyri (feast) of Christos Rachon, Ikaria, 28 Octobre 2016

Ikaria is famous for its community feasts and dances. Almost every day during the summer, one can find a panigiri (feast) in one of the villages around the island. These feasts serve as a strengthening of the bonds of the community and also for raising money for community purposes (building, renovating etc) or for support to a member of the community which might be in trouble. In Octobre of 2016 i had the chance to attend a winter panigiri, at Christos Rachon village, organized by the local athletic team Diagoras Rachon, to support its work. This was a rare opportunity to witness a panigiri with only local people and no turists at all. The video starts with a waltz, which is a long tradition in ikarian feasts. Then, we watch all the young people of the village getting up and taking the stage to celebrate their pride and youth power - I believe that this is something that you won;t witness in other parts of the country and it shows something about the free spirit of the people of this island. As for the local band, I believe they came from Agio Kiriko, but unfortunately I don't know their name. If you happen to know, please inform me. Have a nice time watching!
