November 9, 1960, White House: Presidential election over. John F. Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon by 112,827 votes. Closest election 20th century. President Dwight Eisenhower, age 70, must brief Kennedy, age 43. 27-year age gap, largest in history. Eisenhower privately considered Kennedy too young, too inexperienced. Eisenhower told associates: "He's just a boy." Meeting scheduled afternoon November 9. Eisenhower identified three critical issues: Laos, Cuba, Berlin. Eisenhower told Kennedy about Laos: "This is one of the problems I'm leaving you that I'm not happy about. We may have to fight." Eisenhower: "You might have to go in there and fight it out." Eisenhower: "The key is not Vietnam. The key is Laos." Kennedy disagreed, focused on Vietnam instead. Devastating consequences. Cuba: Eisenhower briefed Kennedy on CIA plan to overthrow Castro. Eisenhower's critical warning: "The invasion must have American air support or it will fail." April 1961: Bay of Pigs. Kennedy canceled air support Eisenhower recommended. Invasion failed catastrophically. Kennedy invited Eisenhower to Camp David five days later. Eisenhower told Kennedy: "Mr. President, that was your first mistake." Eisenhower proved right about Laos, right about Cuba, right about Berlin. #eisenhower #jfk #kennedy #1960Election #bayofpigs #laos #coldwar #PresidentialTransition #nixon #EisenhowerKennedy #historydocumentary #history #presidentialhistory #politicalhistory #americanhistory #americanpresidents #fidelcastro #historicaldocumentary Disclaimer: Based on Eisenhower's diary, Kennedy's notes, White House records, and verified documentation.
