Blood tests & saliva tests are more commonly used in the clinic, where urine tests are more commonly used in research. While blood tests measure both free & total testosterone levels, they tend to only measure total levels of estrogen & progesterone. Saliva tests tend to measure only the free levels of testosterone, estrogen, & progesterone. Barring financial- and/or insurance-related constraints, it may be helpful for have both tests performed, in order to know both total & free hormone levels. “Normal” hormone levels can differ pending on the laboratory performing the test & the kind of test performed. Different labs may have different “normal value ranges,” or “normal value references.” It may be helpful to ask the lab performing the test for a copy of their normal value references, in order to compare results with those references.
