Born in the Mind by Balance in Exile Words are the puppets, a dance of sound, Aliens landing on hollow ground. They carry a story stowed within the hull, A deeper meaning for the sharp and the dull. You poke at the jester while the master is gone, Fooled by the shadow in the light of the dawn. Unnourished and wandering, you stay on the shore, Looking at shells but never seeing the core. The strings lead to thought if you’re willing to find, The ghost in the wood that was born in the mind. The hammer can not build what the mind has not seen, The tool is a ghost in a giant machine. But the bolder the truth, the quicker words wear thin, As the shadow-boxers let the modern daze in. The vision is grand and the skyscraper tall, But the envious watch for the master to fall. They worship the puppet, and they box with the shade, Ignoring the hand where the concepts were made. The ridges are steep, and the air is so cold, Where the peaks of the spirit are brave and bold. The hammer can not build what the mind has not seen, The tool is a ghost in a giant machine. But the bolder the truth, the quicker words wear thin, As the shadow-boxers let the modern daze in. Why is the sunrise a glory to gaze? Most stay on the plains in a functional haze. Few leave the foothills for the ridges of light, To climb past the puppets and out of the night. Only a few reach the peaks, it is true. Looking past the shadows for a higher view. Balance in Exile © 2026 Allen G. Bagby
