To contact visit:- www.davidbakers.com The Fortress of Sveti Ivan (St John) was built by the Illyrians around the 5th century. The fort is located at the top of Kotor's mountain peak. The first destination on the path as you make your way towards the top is the Church of Our Lady of Remedy that was built in the 15th century. From this point its 155 metres to climbing the top. The name for the Church came from its legacy to be able to heal people from the plague, though I suspect the plague finished off many before they reached it. The earliest of Kotor's city walls were built in the 9th century to protect the town from invaders. This changed in 1420 when the area succumbed to Venetian rule. As part of Albania Veneta, the fortifications received their current structure. The walls were added over years by those in charge of the city, whoever it may be. The walls incorporate military architecture of Illyria, Byzantium, Venice and Austria. The list of Kotor's attackers and occupiers is long including the Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Austrians. Also at certain times, Russians, Serbians, British and Hungarians. If the invasions and attacks weren't enough, there had been earthquakes to contend with. A major earthquake in 1979 caused extensive damage to the site, that same year, the site was placed on the World Heritage list. The lack of maintenance, erosion, earthquakes, and vegetation have contributed to its ongoing deterioration since the departure of the Austrians in 1918. In 2005, The European Commission took interest in the fortification not only for its obvious cultural significance but also to maintain and develop it as a resource for tourism, a major part of the local economy. Another icon of the city (one of many) is the Church of St. Nicholas. One of Kotor's youngest buildings, the Serbian Orthodox church built from 1902-1909 and had been built on the place of the Orthodox Church that existed from 1810 to Christmas Eve 1896 when it was burnt down in a fire. Navigating the hills and walls must have been challenging to invaders as they tried to find their way through the streets and walls of Kotor. The city was built this way on purpose, to keep those invading from figuring out exactly where they were, its easy to see why everyone wanted a piece of it. Majority or all of the video was captured using DJI Mavic Air 2 and recorded at 4K. Exceptions would be where the drone cannot be used (ie. Indoor, no fly zones, etc..). Transcript added to the video by myself to share a bit of history for the video its displaying. Video by David Baker - www.davidbakers.com
