“You have to keep your eye on the prize. You have to understand the nature of the threat. If you do this then you realise that democracy is at stake.” Political scientist and @harvard professor Daniel Ziblatt closed the Forum for Economic Dialogue on November 13, 2023 with a thought-provoking and profound analysis on how democracies die and what can be done to save them. Prof. Daniel Ziblatt specializes in the study of Europe and the history of democracy. His three books include the @nytimes best-seller 'How Democracies Die', co-authored with Steve Levitsky, which has been translated into thirty languages. https://www.ubscenter.uzh.ch/en/news_... Democracies around the globe are increasingly under threat. In many countries, populists are gaining ground, polarization is increasing, and voters often fail to vote. Public intellectuals are debating the prospects for post-democratic politics. At the same time, authoritarian regimes are seeing a resurgence. What is driving these trends? And what can be done to reverse them? This was the main topic of our series, which consisted of three events, beginning with a lecture by Wolfgang Schäuble (in German), who provided a political-historical framework of the topic, followed by a talk by experimental psychologist Steven Pinker, who discussed the role of rationality for democratic societies. We concluded with our annual Forum for Economic Dialogue, where experts from various fields discussed the topic from both a political and an economic perspective. #EconomicsForSociety #UZH #shareubs @uzhch @ubsschweiz @UBS @UZHDepartmentofEconomics_ECON @uzh-oec
