About Bornean Orangutan Scientific name: Pongo pygmaeus Native Range: Endemic to the island of Borneo (Indonesia & Malaysia) Habitat: Lowland and peat swamp tropical rainforests Conservation status: Critically Endangered / Appendix I Physical Characteristics: Largest arboreal (tree-dwelling) mammal in the world Adult males develop large cheek pads called flanges and throat sacs Long arms (up to 2 meters span) adapted for life in the canopy Reddish-brown shaggy hair Diet: Primarily frugivorous (fruit makes up most of the diet) Also eats leaves, bark, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates Plays an important role as a seed disperser in rainforest ecosystems Lifestyle: Mostly solitary, especially adult males Females live with dependent offspring Build a new nest in trees almost every evening for sleeping Reproduction: One of the slowest reproductive rates among mammals Females give birth about once every 6–8 years Young stay with their mother for 7–8 years to learn survival skills Threats: Deforestation (especially for palm oil plantations) Illegal hunting and pet trade Habitat fragmentation Other notes: The Bornean orangutan differs in appearance from the Sumatran orangutan, with a broader face and shorter beard and also slightly darker in color. Out of the three, only Bima grew into an adult. Bima gave birth in the following year of her move from Hong Kong to Spain, but sadly the baby didn't live long. Bima passed away after giving birth at Fuengirol Zoo in Spain. I would really appreciate it if anyone knows what happened to Merdeka's only daughter Bima at Fuengirol. ・She has no offspring with Vandu.
