Hypo 1- Introduction to Hypospadias foundation 1. What is hypospadias foundation? a. Started in 2009, Hypospadias foundation is an organization dedicated to achieving better outcomes for children and adults with hypospadias and disorders of sex development. Hypospadias foundation is a sub department at MITR Hospital, an outcome focused unique healthcare facility started by super specialist doctors. b. Why was it started - Hypospadias foundation was started to give personalized care to these children and adults and help them achieve the best outcomes possible. Our commitment in this area makes us one of the best centers for hypospadias and DSD(disorder of sex development) management. 2. What is the mission of hypospadias foundation? a. Clinical care & diagnosis: Every child or adult hypospadias case is different- as a team we work on the finer nuances of diagnosis such as hormonal evaluation or ruling out DSD or even deciding the surgical technique which are important for not only surgery results but long-term outcomes. b. Better counseling & support to families: Counselling for hypospadias is crucial since this is a genital abnormality and is a definite cause for concern among the parents of children with hypospadias and adults with hypospadias. At hypospadias foundation, the care includes medical, psychosocial and financial aspects. c. Better outcomes: Our focus on children and adults with hypospadias for more than 10 years and all varieties from simple, complex to failed cases has led to better outcomes with a complication rate of less than 10%. d. Research: We do continuous research and some of the current projects involve parental concerns in hypospadias, technical aspects of buccal mucosa urethroplasty, penile torsion correction, byar’s flap urethroplasty, Glans intact Byar’s urethroplasty, Use of dermal grafts and 5 alpha reductase deficiency. e. Education: We reach out to the community and increase awareness in both parents and doctors to achieve timely diagnosis and management. 3. What the success story? a. Over the last 11 years, we have treated more than 1500 children and adults with hypospadias and DSD and we have been very privileged to be a part of their lives and in their journey to find cure for hypospadias. b. We have been invited to speak at various national and international conferences to speak about hypospadias treatment and we have been sharing our experiences to help others achieve better outcomes. c. Life changing stories & failed hypospadias: For people with complex hypospadias or failed hypospadias, a good outcome can be life changing. Every year we get adults and children who have been failed multiple surgeries. They come to us having lost all hope. We work closely with families, discuss options and build confidence that success is possible. One thing we have learnt is never to give up hope d. Multiple countries & states of India: We at hypospadias foundation have patients coming from all over India and more than 25 countries. Children and adults from more than 25 countries such as Yemen, Jordan, Nigeria, Tanzania, UAE Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Burma, Australia, Greece and USA e. DSD- disorder of sex development (DSD) is a condition in which the baby is born with either both male and female reproductive organs, atypical sex chromosomes or atypical appearance to their genitals. This condition needs to be thoroughly evaluated before we label a child as DSD. Physical examination along with other tests will be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. We work with pediatric endocrinologist as a team in diagnosing this condition and planning further treatment. At hypospadias foundation we regularly get patients from more than 25 countries.
