Learning Portuguese Is Fun!

Playing games is a great way to learn and practice language skills. My kids were laughing and playing all while learning Portuguese. Games really helping kids hone their linguistic deduction skills, negotiating meaning from the clues given. (We all know learning a new language involves a little bit of guessing!) And as long as you don’t make a big deal out of mistakes and you encourage them to keep looking inside the box, the children will see that making mistakes is part of the game and part of learning. And they’ll all be the better for it. Give Me or Me Da Before you start have the kids practice the phrase “give me something that is…” or “me da alguma coisa que… You can play this game with two kids or a large classroom or group. Preparation: gather 1 box if it’s for a few kids or 2 boxes if it’s for a large group. The boxes must contain the same types of items. You can have everyday objects like keys, rock, book, soap, etc. The items don’t need to look exactly the same, as long as they’re there. After drawing a word, you describe the item and its uses (without saying the name). Kind of like catch phrase or Sheraids. You can even use gestures or act it out. The kids deduce which item you’re looking for. The kid who first zeroes in on those clues and brings you the correct item gets the point. With beginners, you’re going to be more simple with your clues. Give them clear hints as to what you need. If you need a comb, you can say. “give me something I can use on my hair” and gesture appropriately. (For advanced language learners, you can be coy.
