The Rock of Cefalu towers 270 metres (almost 900 feet) above the city. Its origins are shrouded in myth and there is evidence of human occupation dating back 3500 years. Greeks & Romans took advantage of this easily defended site. Following Norman modifications the fortress was developed further until the strategic importance of the area declined and the site abandoned around 200 years ago.
