Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children – After you have claimed This video has audio and subtitles. A British Sign Language (BSL) version of this video is also available at: / dwpsign This video applies to England and Wales. For Scotland, please check for the benefits you can claim at: https://www.mygov.scot/benefits This video is the third in a series of four videos that provide information about Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children – helpful for parents and carers wanting to find out more about claiming DLA for a child. It explains what happens after a DLA claim is made. It also gives an overview of the decision letter and what happens when an award is ending. This video is a guide only. Transcript: When we receive your DLA claim form, we will send you confirmation by letter or by text message. This could take up to 2 weeks from the date you sent the form to us. When we have reviewed your form, we may contact you, or anyone you have named for more information. We will only contact people named on your form if you have given us your consent. It takes about 8 weeks for us to make a decision. But it can take longer if we need more information. We will then send you a decision letter. This will tell you if the child can get DLA. If the child has been awarded DLA, the letter will tell you the day the award starts from and how long the award is for. It tells you the rate of care and mobility they have been awarded and what to do if the child’s circumstances change. The decision letter also tells you what to do if you do not understand or you disagree with the decision. It is important that you tell us about any changes in the child’s circumstances straight away so we pay the correct amount of DLA. If the child is awarded DLA the person caring for the child could get additional benefits such as Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Credit. They may also be able to get extra money for benefits they already claim, for example Housing Benefit or Universal Credit. When the child’s DLA award is due to end, we will send you a renewal claim form. You should complete and return the form to us. This is so we can decide if they can be awarded DLA again. When a child reaches age 16 they cannot continue to claim DLA. They will instead be invited to claim Personal Independence Payment, also known as PIP. There is more information about this in our video called ‘When a child turns 16’.
