Kamban, also known as Kambar, was a Tamil poet and scholar who lived during the 12th century. He is best known for his epic poem, the Kamba Ramayana, which is a retelling of the Hindu epic Ramayana in Tamil. The Kamba Ramayana tells the story of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, who is exiled to the forest along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Sita is kidnapped by the demon king Ravana, and Rama and Lakshmana embark on a quest to rescue her. With the help of the monkey god Hanuman and an army of monkeys, they wage war against Ravana and his army of demons, ultimately defeating them and rescuing Sita. Throughout the epic, Kamban weaves in themes of dharma (righteousness), karma (action and consequence), and bhakti (devotion). He also explores the complexities of human relationships, including the bonds between siblings, spouses, and friends, and the challenges of navigating duty and loyalty. Aside from the Kamba Ramayana, Kamban also wrote several other works, including the Erezhupathu, a collection of 70 short poems, and the Kanda Puranam, a Tamil version of the Skanda Purana. His works have had a profound influence on Tamil literature and culture, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest Tamil poets of all time.
