The serve is arguably the most important stroke in tennis. Jeff Salzenstein shares one simple trick to help you fix your knee bend on the serve. He explains and demonstrates the right way to use your legs efficiently, and how to connect them with your upper body motion. Most players don’t know how to use their legs properly on the tennis serve. One of the common problems is what Jeff calls a delayed knee bent. This occurs when the ball is released first , and the knee bend is performed afterwards. The second problem is the reverse knee bent, when players bend their knees before tossing the ball. Jeff prefers having a quicker serve motion, which involves connecting the knees to the toss. Roger Federer’s serve is a perfect example to study for practicing this concept. As soon as he releases the ball, he starts to bend his knees early on the motion. Practice getting into a solid stance and keep your legs relatively straight at the beginning. Focus on releasing the ball, and then finding your trophy position. This is a very simple, elegant and efficient way to learn how to serve. When you bend your knees, make sure to get out of the jump as soon as you can. If you develop a great upper body motion, you won’t need to have a deep knee bent on your serve. In fact, you can work.
