"I'd really like to talk about retaliation at work." I had expected the podcast episode with Sarah Noll Wilson to be a continuation of the discussion we has started on her podcast Conversations on Conversations - (you can listen to that here: https://lnkd.in/g3f3hnxQ). I had suggested maybe we could talk about her book "Don't Feed The Elephants", gossip and maybe podcasting in our pre-call email but Sarah knows me well enough to know I'd be comfortable embracing a different suggestion on the fly. This is why I don't script my podcast - planning everything in advance doesn't lead to spontaneity. This is not the episode I expected but I'm so glad we discussed it. Co-creating improved employee experience and a better future of work involves talking about hard and difficult things. Retaliation at work is not something people like to admit happens though it happens often. It's frequently subtle, hard to prove. Sarah and I both share stories to illustrate the impacts. We talk about solutions and how to improve psychological safety. The Twitter thread we discuss in the middle of the session seems to have been deleted by the author which is too bad because it was such and interesting example of the bravery it takes to confront retaliation. A word about sarcasm. I like to think that I've eliminated sarcasm as a go-to reaction but the truth is I'm still working on it. When Sarah tells me about someone who sent her harassing emails, I respond in full sarcasm about his willingness to put such a negative behaviour in writing. I don't admire his actions in the least - sarcasm does not translate well in a podcast. I could have edited this out but I want to highlight how I continue to learn about audio presentation. If you are experiencing retaliation at work, I hope this episode helps you. As always, I'd love to know your thoughts. Please comment, share and review. We did this as a video podcast as well so you can also find it on YouTube. I'll share some clips later this week. https://lnkd.in/gHZGsQkm #podcast #leadership #courage #management #coaching #psychologicalsafety #emotionalintelligence #hybrid #remote #hybridremoteexcellence #ethics #storytelling Sarah Noll Wilson, Inc. is who you call when you’re ready to do the hard work of leading yourself and leading others.
