Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Data East Publisher: Data East Year of Release: 1989 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- A shoot 'em up from Data East which is mostly forgettable, Vapor Trail doesn't make any terrible missteps, but it's just not particularly exciting. In terms of abilities, your craft can initiate an energy-infused corkscrew manoeuvre that allows you plow into enemies and do damage to them for the duration of the effect. The energy reserve -- shown bottom centre of the screen -- needs to recharge before you can perform the move again, so its use shouldn't be squandered. There's also collectible weapon upgrades to bestow scatter-shot and multi-missles to your plane, and there's even a flame cannon which attaches itself to your hull and lasts until you get hit. Trouble is, the gameplay and its enemies and general level design are just a bit bland; the most exciting thing about the game is its name. Maybe playing some of the more iconic shooters from the early and mid 90s has skewed my expectations, but Vapor Trail is just a bit too 'ho hum'.
