Often overshadowed by its northern neighbor, Kush nonetheless rose to power through strategic trade, mineral wealth, and skilled craftsmanship—particularly in ironworking. Early on, Kerma emerged as the kingdom’s first major capital, showcasing a unique culture that stood at the crossroads of sub-Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean world. Over time, Kushite rulers conquered and were, in turn, influenced by nearby Egypt, even establishing their own line of pharaohs during Egypt’s 25th Dynasty. As the kingdom evolved, its center of power shifted to Napata and later to Meroë, a thriving hub of commerce and metallurgy.
