Looking at a Cessna 182P, you'll discover some basics about the fuel tanks and how to drain them without making a smelly mess. To prepare the airplane, you don't want too much fuel in the tanks. To be clear, you do not want to run out of fuel! However you will need some 5 gallon tanks to store your fuel. After a long cross-country flight and some pattern work to deplete the fuel, each tank had a little less than 10 gallons in each tank. That is a total of under 20 gallons. The challenge now is to drain the tanks without the toxics fumes. In the past, simply remove the drain valve on the wings works, until the last gallon or so when it spews all over the wing, door, and everywhere. We needed to remove the fuel selector valve, which in a Cessna allows the pilot to select the left, right or both tanks, because this valve's O rings were likely defective. Fuel was seeping onto the outside and slow dripping below. The bottom drain is an options, but a square, very snug plug, needs the perfect plumbing tool, which we did not have in our kit. This process takes time, but it works.
