(1 Jan 1970) RR7012B ALCATRAZ: AN AMERICAN INDIAN DREAM In November 1969 14 Indians seized Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay, site of the former high security prison -one of the most notorious in the world - which was closed in 1963 because it was too costly to maintain. Now there are 800 Indians on the island, supported by provisions from all over America - from red man and white man - and they have no intention of leaving. They base their claim to the island on an old treaty which gives Indians the right to abandoned federal property, and have offered to pay $24 in glass beads and cloth for it - the price paid to Indians for Manhattan Island, New York City. Alcatraz is not only inhospitable, but practically uninhabitable, but the Indians living there claim that it compares favourably with the Indian reservations. San Francisco City, which has first option to buy Alcatraz, has made no decision as to its future, but the Indians plan to turn it into an Indian university and cultural centre, given the opportunity.
