Silver Reef Ghost town first called “Rock-pile” a rare tour. Exploring from Duck Creek Utah to Silver Reef and what we find along the way. This was a full day of road trip fun. Silver Reef is a ghost town in Washington County, Utah. It was a mining town from the 1870s to the early 1900s when silver deposits were discovered in the area's sandstone cliffs. The town's heyday was from 1876 to 1890, when it had up to 2,000 residents. Silver Reef was established in 1866 when prospector John Kemple discovered a vein of silver in a sandstone formation. In 1875, two bankers from Salt Lake City sent William Barbee to stake mining claims in the area. Miners and merchants came to the new silver fields, renaming the "Rockpile" Silver Reef. The town grew quickly, with sturdy buildings erected for nine grocery stores, six saloons, a newspaper, and five restaurants. Chinese laborers also set up their own Chinatown in the town. The town's population advanced to over 1,500 during the peak years of 1878 to 1882. Most of the mines closed in 1884 due to the decline of the world silver market, the difficulty of pumping water out of the mines, and the decrease of miners' wages. The last mine shut down in 1891. All four attempts to revive the mines from 1898-1950 failed. Silver Reef is now a ghost town, but the original Wells Fargo Express Building is still standing and it houses the museum. The town still displays some of the ruins of the former boomtown. #history #ghosttown #mining #exploring Gear we use and recommend: Click the link below https://www.amazon.com/shop/weekendes...
