Citizens for Decent Literature was affiliated with Charles Keating, a Roman Catholic anti-pornography campaigner. The film stars John Larch, Vivi Janiss and Paul Picerni. The film tells the tragic story of 11-year-old Karen Fleming, a bright and cheerful girl who mysteriously disappears on her short walk home from school. Her parents, initially thinking she may be delayed, grow increasingly concerned, and the police begin a search. Clues lead them to a local store where Karen was last seen, and suspicion falls on Paul Halliday, a quiet teenager who was also in the store. As the investigation unfolds, Paul’s secret collection of violent and pornographic materials is discovered, suggesting a connection to Karen’s disappearance. Ultimately, Karen is found murdered, and Paul confesses. The film ends with a warning about the dangers of obscene publications, linking them to moral decay and violent crime, and urges communities to take action against such materials to protect children. 0:26 – Narrator Tom Harmon introduces 11-year-old Karen Fleming, a bright and cheerful girl, and sets the stage for a tragic story about her disappearance. 1:12 – Karen's parents worry when she doesn't come home on time; they begin to search and call friends and neighbors. 3:08 – Police are contacted; they investigate and begin questioning her parents about Karen's behavior and any clues. 5:06 – Officers visit Baker’s Variety Store, the last place Karen was seen. The shopkeeper confirms she was there alone and mentions another customer, Paul Halliday. 7:54 – Police go to the Halliday home to question Paul. His parents insist he knows nothing. Paul claims he saw Karen but didn’t interact with her. 12:03 – Karen’s parents are distraught; they receive a call that her body has been found murdered in a ditch near the city dump. 15:34 – Police visit Karen’s teacher, Miss Armstrong, who shares a heartfelt composition Karen wrote titled "My Very Happy Life," illustrating her innocence and hope. 18:08 – Police return to the Halliday home. Paul's mother leads them to his "den," where they find disturbing magazines and films. Paul's behavior is questioned. 22:02 – Paul’s parents are in disbelief over the explicit materials found. Paul admits to involvement in Karen's murder, saying he "didn't mean to do it." 24:09 – Baker, the store owner, tries to deflect blame. The officer accuses him of selling material that distorts kids' understanding of sex and relationships. 25:47 – The narrator explains Karen’s story is based on a real case. The film ends with a warning about the dangers of obscene material and a call to action for communities to fight the spread of such content. This film was considered lost for many years, but roughly a decade ago a print was discovered in the moving image collection of the Oregon Historical Society. The film is presented courtesy of OHS https://www.ohs.org/ Producer Charles Keating served on the 1969 President's Commission on Obscenity and Pornography. Later he ran the American Continental Corporation and the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which so exploited the banking deregulations under Reagan that it led to the complete collapse of the Savings and Loan industry, not to mention investigations of the "Keating Five," which included the current Senator John McCain. Tom Harmon, the narrator of the film, was married to actress Elyse Knox whose career include being a WWII pin up girl. He was a well-known sportscaster at CBS and delivered the nightly sports report on KTLA-TV in Los Angeles and on ABC radio.
