Corneal Epithelial Stem Cells | Research Impact [by Mahidol World]

Twelve years ago, the corneal epithelial stem cell team and I started the epithelial stem cell transplantation project at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. The aim of this project is to help patients who suffer from corneal limbal stem cell deficiency. It is a very difficult condition to treat with conventional treatment. This disease can lead to vision loss and blindness in many cases. At present, this team has successfully performed stem cell transplantation for these patients. We used 3 different methods, known as cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET), cultivated oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (COMET), and simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET). Which can proudly state that Siriraj Hospital pioneered the limbal stem cell transplantation in Thailand; as CLET was first performed in 2007, followed by COMET in 2008, and the lastly, the first SLET was performed in Thailand in 2014. Additionally, our work has been published in several international journals.
