CORBRIDGE | Full tour of stunning Corbridge Northumberland In todays video we are exploring the beautiful village of Corbridge, located 16 miles from Newcastle and 4 miles east of Hexham. Come with me as we take a look around the village and see what's there and what you will see if you come and visit. Corbridge is nestled in the scenic Tyne Valley and with a captivating history that spans millennia. Its story is a rich tapestry woven from Roman occupation, medieval development, and more recent evolution. The most prominent historical layer is undoubtedly its Roman past, where it thrived as Corstopitum, a vital Roman town. Corstopitum served as a significant supply base along Hadrian's Wall, a testament to its strategic importance. Archaeological excavations have unearthed a wealth of artifacts, including the remarkable Corbridge Hoard, which offers invaluable insights into Roman military and civilian life. The town's layout and the remains of its granaries and other structures provide a tangible connection to this era. Beyond the Roman period, Corbridge transitioned into a medieval settlement, with St. Andrew's Church standing as a testament to this era. This ancient church, with its diverse architectural elements, reflects the village's continuous occupation and adaptation. Corbridge's position near the Scottish border meant it experienced periods of turbulence and conflict, shaping its defensive character. In more modern times, the arrival of the railway in the 19th century brought further changes, stimulating growth and the construction of Victorian residences. Today, Corbridge retains its historic charm while functioning as a vibrant community. To give a better feel for the modern day Corbridge, it is worth mentioning some of the present day establishments that populate the area. For those looking for accomodation, The Angel of Corbridge is a well known hotel, and there are also many other bed and breakfast locations. For those looking for places to eat and drink, popular pubs include The Black Bull, and The Wheatsheaf. For shopping, Corbridge is known for its independent shops, such as "The Corbridge Larder" or "Forum Books". These help to add to the unique feel of the town. I hope you enjoyed this 4k walking tour.
