The most prominent historical layer is undoubtedly its Roman past, where it thrived as Corstopitum, a vital Roman town. Corstopitum served as a significant supply base along Hadrian's Wall, a testament to its strategic importance. Archaeological excavations have unearthed a wealth of artifacts, including the remarkable Corbridge Hoard, which offers invaluable insights into Roman military and civilian life.
