And my 74th country counting towards my bucket list . San Marino is the 3rd smallest country in Europe, probably smaller than my home country, Singapore, I think. It is sitting in enclave and surrounded by Italy, sitting high up the mountain. That's the only reason why I was in Rimini or even Rome or even Italy for that matter. The entire region covered by fog all the way from eastern coastal area of Italy I noticed since last night as the bus travel northwards. It was pretty worrying for me. The fog might cover the entire San Marino just like it covered Rimini. And what's the point in going up there. That said, I already made it that far and there was no allowance for me to take account of that really. I resignedly bought the bus ticket from the bus stop just in front of the train station. Praying for best, expecting the worst outcome. San Marino located 1 hour plus of bus journey from Rimini. The journey involved scaling up a windy uphill of 800 plus metre from sea level. As the bus headed into San Marino territory, it seemed to break out from the fog leaving it behind at sea level. Wooh... my feeling got lifted The highlight of the old city perched over San Marino new city is the castle tower. There are altogether 3 of them perched along the seemingly impossible mountain ridge. They are all connected via a single hike route. Not more than 3km each way, the hiking route offers a fantastic view of the San Marino plains and greater Italian plains. On a good clear day, one could even see Rimini and the Adriatic Sea beyond. Today the horizon was covered by a sea of another kind, cloud sea! The castle complex, perched up at 800m above sea level consists of a medieval town which now all convert to shops and restaurants. And 3 castle towers along the impossible mountain ridge.. So touristy here... The good thing was that I came in winter lull season. 99% of the shops were closed on the day. Good riddance to the shops and the people I almost had this whole San Marino to myself. I like this a lot... I wondered if I felt the same if I was here during tourists peak season By the time I stepped out lazing in the cafe, I couldnt believe what I saw out there. Sea of clouds! It isnt my first sea cloud sighting. But to see such a thick sea of these white cotton was my certain first. It just felt like the entire italy all engulfed by the white cotton monster, leaving where I am now! I made a logistic miscalculation. I shouldn't have stay in San Marino and instead press on and move to Bologna.
