Ever had trouble holding your students' focus during an animal science lesson? Try wheeling in a cow skeleton. That will get their attention. At least it worked for Trent Van Leuven, an agriculture teacher at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho. Van Leuven realized that his lessons about things like primal carcass cuts, ruminant digestion, artificial insemination, and cattle body structure, were lacking that hands-on aspect that grabs and holds students interest. He couldn't bring a cow into the classroom, so he did the next best thing. He created a mobile cow skeleton. "From the moment I wheel the cow into the classroom, the students' interest is engaged," said VanLeuven. Visit NAAE's Communities of Practice to read exactly how he created his mobile masterpiece. Thanks Trent, for the great idea!
