The Last Episode of the Dearne Valley Railway Story - Part 5

We're in Shafton near Barnsley to conclude our story of the disused Dearne Valley Railway line. We've been following the lost railway from Doncaster towards Barnsley. The line opened in 1909 and connected Black Car junction with Brierley Junction. Passenger trains ran between Edlington and Wakefield, a railmotor car ran by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In the last episode we finished at Grimethorpe, but now we've moved a mile or so up the line where the line entered Shatfon via a short 92 yard tunnel. We see the Deane Valley Railway seperate from the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway at Shafton junction, where once sat a signal box. We'll be looking at those 2 lines and a short section of the Hull & Barnsley Railway that formed a triangle. If we follow the Dearn Valley line we arrive at Brierley Junction where it met the Hull & Barnsley Railway. The junction is now permanently flooded so we dont get the opportunity to look around the junction today. We follow the H&B back towards the intersection with the Lancashire & Yorkshire where once it crossed with a bridge. As we'll see the bridge is well and truly missing, with barely a brick left to find. To finish off we see the section of L&Y railway back to Shafton Junction.
