The violent history of the United States can be difficult to reckon with, perverting the meaning of patriotism. Filmmaker and guest commentator Ken Burns says for many, choosing to remember our failings is somehow considered anti-American. But Burns argues the treatment of Native Americans across the country was often brutal, bloody and shameful, and confronting these hard truths makes us stronger as a nation. He points to the National Park Service's decision to recognize the Nov. 29, 1864 massacre of Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho people as a part of this process.
