There are two camps of “The Muppet Christmas Carol” fans—those who fast forward through “When Love is Gone” on their VHS copy and those who rewind to watch it over and over and over again. This cover is for those who fall into the latter group. Written by Paul Williams and performed by Meredith Braun (with Michael Caine), the song was cut from the film’s theatrical distribution due to concerns that the song was too “adult-emotional” for the target audience. The song was restored for the VHS release, but misplaced film negatives ensured that the song was excluded yet again for subsequent DVD and streaming releases. As a result, many new audiences never experienced this song as part of “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” I grew up with the song intact on the VHS. For this “pleasure to have in class” kid it always resonated on a profound but unknowable level. Over the years, it has stuck with me as only piece of deeply nostalgic pop culture can. The original soundtrack recording is rich and evocative and fully realized. I was delighted that our arranger and orchestrator Assaf Gleizner found so many new layers of emotion lurking beneath the surface of this cult classic, especially in the cello / piano duet that holds everything from love to sadness to barely-contained bitter rage. Enjoy this little holiday gift from us to you.
