Apocalyptic Scenes of Gulf War 'Highway of Death' - Desert Storm Rare and Unseen Footage (1991)

On 1 March 1991, one day after the end of the Gulf War, ITN’s cameras travelled down Highway 80 in Kuwait. The main road between Kuwait and Iraq, it was on Highway 80 that the final stages of Operation Desert Storm played out as American, Canadian, British and French air and ground forces attacked an Iraqi army convoy as it beat a panicked armed retreat across the border into Iraq. As well as documenting the devastation left behind on the road (which had already been dubbed the ‘Highway of Death’ by Western press), ITN’s crews filmed scenes of jubilation as American and British soldiers celebrated their victory and recorded the hellish oil well fires set by Saddam Hussein’s forces as they fled Kuwait. The footage in this video was digitised in February 2024 by the ITN Archive team and is presented here for the first time since it was recorded 23 years ago. Out of respect for the dead and those who served in the Gulf conflict, and to ensure this historic footage could be made available to the widest possible audience, we have removed all images of dead bodies featured in the original material. A number of dead bodies are visible in the original rushes which are preserved and available to license, particularly in the footage filmed on 1 March 1991, the first day after the war’s end. The precise number of people killed in the assault on Highway 80 is not known: low-end estimates place the number at 200-300, while the highest is around 10,000.
