Full webinar on-demand: https://purchase.jbjs.org/jbjs-webina... Intertrochanteric hip fractures account for 7% of all osteoporotic fragility fractures in the US. While the incidence of such fractures has decreased slightly in the western world, the increase in the elderly population has led to a doubling of intertrochanteric hip fractures over the past three decades. Because that trend is expected to continue, the total annual cost of hip fractures in the US is expected to hit $16 billion by the year 2040. Due to the clinical burden to individuals and the financial burden to the health care system, recent studies have focused on the implants orthopaedists typically use to manage these fractures: intramedullary nails or sliding hip screws. This complimentary webinar, moderated by JBJS Associate Editor Kyle Jeray, MD, examines the clinical and cost performance of these two fixation types. Eric Swart, MD explores the relative cost-effectiveness of the two fixation approaches by presenting findings from his 2014 JBJS study. In addition, Rudolf Reindl, MD, presents findings from a randomized trial in the December 2, 2015 JBJS that compared clinical outcomes of the two fixation types in unstable intertrochanteric hip fractures. Commentary from hip-fracture experts Clifford Jones, MD and Michael Archdeacon, MD, expands on the author presentations. The last 15 minutes of the webinar is devoted to a live Q&A session, during which audience members ask questions of the authors and commentators.
