Allegro ‒ Pesante Alfred Schnittke (1934 — 1998) was a Soviet and Russian composer of Jewish and German descent. Born in Engels, in the Volga-German Republic of the Soviet Union, he spent much of his life navigating the strict Soviet censor while developing a unique and influential musical voice. His family moved to Vienna in 1946, where he developed an early appreciation for Western music. They returned to Moscow in 1948, where Schnittke continued his musical education. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was influenced by both Russian and Western European musical traditions. Some of his most important works are his Symphony No.1 and Violin Sonata No.2, both of which display his novel concept of polystylism. This approach reflects Schnittke's view of music history as a continuum rather than as isolated periods.
