im gonna be so real this vid has been fully edited and sitting in my laptop for weeks idk why i've been procrastinating uploading it but it's ok it's here now! im not even kidding when i say this was the greatest trip ever. i'm gonna gush about how cool this experience was super quick so ignore this if you're not trynna read: to begin with, this was my first time travelling outside of the country without my family, my first time travelling outside of the country in general in 5 years, my first time ever being below the equator, and my first time ever in south america. with all that, i was already beyond excited to go on this trip. lima itself was so beautiful and had the most amazing food i've ever had (i'm not even kidding i was so excited every time i was eating anything because it was all so good). travelling with medlife allowed me to completely immerse myself in peruvian culture which was so much more amazing than i could've ever expected. not only was i able to practice my spanish every single day, but i was also visiting communities that tourists don't get to see. medlife organized post clinic activities in which we got to hear about medicine from the perspective of a doctor in lima, the story of how someone became their community leader, and so much more. i was in awe of how kind every single person in every community we volunteered at was. they would bring us food and coffee just because, which made immersing myself in the culture so much simpler. i also was able to learn so much more about medicine than i expected. rotating around different stations such as ob/gyn, dentistry, pharmacy, and more allowed me to experience every possible side of the mobile clinics as well as doing so much hands-on work! practicing my spanish was also such a highlight for me. i was always very drawn to the language and in highschool, spanish was always one of my favorite subjects. unfortunately in college, i stopped using it because i wasn't taking any classes and there was no need for me to practice. i specifically want to share this one moment because it was so significant to me: on the flight to lima i decided that i would speak in spanish any chance i had even if i was unsure of myself. the flight attendant was walking by with drinks and i spoke to her fully in spanish and understood everything she was asking/saying except for when she said the word "hielo". i had never heard this word and i unfortunately had to give up my "fluent in spanish" act and had to ask her to translate. that word meant ice. throughout the entire trip i forced myself to continue speaking spanish any chance i had. then, when i was on the flight back home from lima, a flight attendant was walking by with drinks again. yet again, i spoke fully in spanish. when the flight attendant asked me "quieres hielo", i said "no, gracias". i know this is so tiny and it's literally just one word but to me that was the most amazing full circle moment i could've asked for. i was really proud of how throughout the entire trip, i pushed past any fear of mispronunciation and insecurities about my american accent and forced myself to embrace the language and culture to the fullest. i even wanted to try cuy (fried guinea pig) but unfortunately couldn't find any in lima. apart from the amazing experiences from the language, food, culture, medicine, volunteering, and travel in peru, there was one last thing that i loved so much that i'd like to share. being with such an amazing group of people was one of my favorite takeaways from this trip. sleeping in a room with 12 beds (and 12 girls) seemed a little scary to me at first, but this ended up being one of my favorite things. it literally felt like being at a summer camp except because we're adults we don't have a bedtime and can literally do whatever we want (within the confines of the law and morality obviously, y'all get what i mean). regardless of the fact that most of the people on the trip do go to my school (uc davis), mostly everyone were strangers to me. by the end of the trip not only did we have millions of inside jokes, but we all share amazing memories that no one else would fully be able to understand. getting to hang out with all these people every day, experience all the same things for the first time together, and more, was honestly so fulfilling to the point where i can't even explain it. like we fully jumped into the middle of the ocean in peru to swim with sea lions together. like what??? i'm so happy i did this service learning trip, and i'm so grateful to medlife and the kindness of the communities of peru for making this amazing experience possible. this is something i'll definitely be talking about forever. thank you to whoever read all that i'm sorry for the word dump. i'm just writing as my brain moves so ignore the millions of grammatical errors hehe. hope you enjoy the vid!!!
