The Monongah Mine Disaster of December sixth, nineteen-oh-seven remains the deadliest coal mining tragedy in American history. More than three hundred men and boys were killed in an explosion so violent it shook the Monongahela Valley and collapsed an entire mountainside. For five days, families waited in the freezing cold at the pit mouth, praying for survivors. Most of the bodies came out burned, crushed, or in pieces. Some never came out at all. This Holler Tales documentary tells the true story of Monongah—what caused the explosion, the corruption buried deep in the mine, the immigrant families who suffered, and the community that refused to let its dead be forgotten. If you grew up around coal camps, or you’re old enough to remember how dangerous the mines once were, this story will hit home. Settle in, let the fire crackle, and listen to this long-form Appalachian history documentary for sleep, understanding, and remembrance. #appalachia #coalminers #monongah #minedisaster #westvirginiahistory #coalmining #hollertales #documentaryforsleep #oldappalachia #americanhistory Welcome to Holler Tales — where the old mountains still whisper if you know how to listen.
