This is a brief look at Ralph Bakshi's Coonskin. Released in 1975 Coonskin was a satire of Disney's Song of the South. The critique on Black stereotypes in media and in the minds of White America in general, was not received with open arms. It was considered extremely offensive and off-putting. That was the point. This video will discuss the film along side examples of true stories from the great migration and Harlem. Stories of Ida Mae Brandon Gladney & Dr. Robert Joseph Pershing Foster are taken from - The Warmth of Other Suns - By Isabel Wilkerson (2010) Story of Stephanie St. Clair taken from Sex Workers, Psychics, and Numbers Runners - By LaShawn Harris (2016) The Mob - The Mafia Encyclopedia - By Carl Sifakis (2005) Redlining - The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America - By Richard Rothstein (2017)
