Mid of Italian and Israeli flags STORYLINE Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi met with Israel''s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in Jerusalem on Tuesday, on the second day of his visit to the region. Berlusconi arrived in Israel on Monday along with eight top ministers for a joint Cabinet meeting with their Israeli counterparts. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini visited the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem on Tuesday morning. The Western Wall is Judaism''s holiest place and is the last remnant of the second of two biblical temples which stood on the site. Frattini later also held separate talks with Lieberman at the Foreign Ministry. Under Berlusconi''s leadership, Italy has become one of Israel''s strongest allies in Europe. The Italian leader told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday that ultimately he hopes to make Israel a member of the European Union. Israel has close trade ties with the EU, but has never expressed interest in joining the bloc. Netanyahu said the two sides were expected to sign a series of agreements during the visit, on subjects including energy, the environment and health. Berlusconi''s three-day visit is his first overseas since an assailant attacked him in Milan in December and broke his nose and two teeth. Last month, Israel''s government convened for the first time in Berlin, for a special joint session with the German government to discuss various regional issues.
