There were fifteen semi-circular steps leading to the Nicanor Gate in the Second Temple during the time of Jesus. On the way to Jerusalem during the three commanded feasts, the Jewish people, led by the Levitical choir, sang fifteen psalms on their way to Jerusalem. The Levites forming the choir of the Second Temple often sang on the fifteen steps leading to the Nicanor Gate. There are fifteen Psalms of Ascent. One psalm for each step. These steps were one half a cubit (9 inches) tall and one half of a cubit (9 inches) deep. To the west side of these steps was a chamber or room called the Chamber of Instruments. This chamber was dedicated for the purpose of choir rehearsals and the safe storage of the musical instruments used in the Temple services. The Psalms of Ascent are psalm 120 through psalm 134. The Hebrew word translated as "ascent" is ma'alah, which means "to ascend" indicating a movement upward.
