Gray Rain (2011) - Composed by Austin Wintory. Commissioned and Premiered by the Boulder Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Devin Patrick Hughes. Featuring the Cherry Creek Chorale (Music director Brian Patrick Leatherman). PROGRAM NOTES: "Gray Rain" began in its long gestation in 2001, in the aftermath of September 11th and went through considerable evolution before arriving at its final form. The piece began as a choral work, in honor of those lost, but ultimately that felt shallow and reactionary, so I put it on the shelf. Later, while visiting the concentration camp at Dachau, I felt a resurgent need to write a piece commemorating those lost, but this too came to feel not right. More years passed with only occasional tinkering, before my mind started to wander towards the much bigger archetypes of life and death. It was in this perfect moment that conductor Devin Hughes arrived into my life and offered this composer residency, with the intention to write 3 inter-connected works: Birth, Death, Re-Birth, corresponding to the '11/'12 Season opener, closer, and subsequent season opener. "Gray Rain" is the first in this trilogy, and in tackling the notion of Birth, concludes that Birth and Death are essentially the same entity. The piece is almost akin to a march, constantly moving towards death, and in doing so passing through the many emotional states one must before ultimately accepting mortality. To quote Steve Jobs, "No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life." I couldn't agree more with this assessment. Life's meaning and sense of purpose is owed entirely to its being finite. To me that is ultimately cause for celebration. As is perhaps obvious, while this piece is today a form of 9/11 commemoration, it is not a literal tribute. I have no desire to publicly share my grief or impose any on anyone else. Like so many other events, that day was merely a reminder of our shared fate; so too is this piece. The premiere performances took place October 14th and 15th, 2011 in Boulder, CO and Denver, CO. This video was prepared courtesy of the Cherry Creek Chorale. Recording and mixing by Penguin Digital. My deepest thanks to Devin and Brian for their trust in my sometimes-crazy ambitions with this residency. It's a joy to make music with you both. / awintory / awintory / a.wintory
